More about this artwork

This poignant painting by the acclaimed artist Lawrence Alma-Tadema offers a tender and sensitive portrayal of Mary Magdalene, a figure steeped in historical and religious significance. Painted in 1854, Alma-Tadema's work delves deep into the emotional and spiritual complexity of its subject. In this close-up representation, Mary Magdalene is captured in a contemplative, almost melancholic pose. Her gaze is directed downward, evoking a deep sense of introspection or sorrow. The artist’s mastery in rendering the textures of her skin and hair adds a lifelike quality to the painting, while the subtle interplay of light and shadow plays across her face, highlighting her features with an almost divine luminescence. The dark backdrop contrasts sharply with her softly illuminated profile, focusing the viewer’s attention entirely on her. Notably, her earrings and the delicate red necklace add a touch of color, symbolizing perhaps both her earthly past and her spiritual penitence.Alma-Tadema’s “Mary Magdalene” transcends time, offering a window into the soul of one of history’s most enigmatic women.

Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was a Dutch painter of special British denizenship. Born in Dronrijp, the Netherlands, and trained at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, Belgium, he settled in England in 1870 and spent the rest of his life there. A classical-subject painter, he became famous for his depictions of the luxury and decadence of the Roman Empire, with languorous figures set in fabulous marbled interiors or against a backdrop of dazzling blue Mediterranean Sea and sky. Alma-Tadema was considered one of the most popular Victorian painters.
