More about this artwork

An enchanting masterpiece by Lawrence Alma-Tadema, "The Women of Amphissa" illustrates a profound narrative of compassion and humanity that transcends the boundaries of time. Painted in 1887, this work depicts an ancient story set in the classical city of Amphissa. It tells of a group of Bacchantes - female followers of Bacchus, the god of wine - who exhausted and disoriented after a night of Bacchic revelry, find themselves at dawn in the market square of Amphissa. The scene captures the moment of tender care as the local women of Amphissa, upon discovering these vulnerable strangers, choose to protect and nurture them rather than expelling or punishing them. The painting’s composition beautifully orchestrates a contrast between the serenity of sleep and the active gestures of nurturing, creating an atmosphere of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.Alma-Tadema's meticulous attention to detail brings this scene to life with stunning realism, from the draping of the classical garments to the architectural details of the city structures, bathed in a gentle, diffused light that enhances the ethereal quality of the moment."The Women of Amphissa" stands out not only as a visual feast but also as a reminder of the timeless values of empathy and kindness in our interactions with the other. As we observe the scene, we not only appreciate the exquisite artistry but are also moved by the story’s heartfelt humanity.

Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was a Dutch painter of special British denizenship. Born in Dronrijp, the Netherlands, and trained at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, Belgium, he settled in England in 1870 and spent the rest of his life there. A classical-subject painter, he became famous for his depictions of the luxury and decadence of the Roman Empire, with languorous figures set in fabulous marbled interiors or against a backdrop of dazzling blue Mediterranean Sea and sky. Alma-Tadema was considered one of the most popular Victorian painters.
