More about this artwork

Max Liebermann's "Woman Sewing" is a captivating examination of an everyday domestic scene portrayed with remarkable expressiveness and subtlety. This drawing features a woman engrossed in the act of sewing. The strokes of the sketch are both fluid and deliberate, capturing not only the physical movement but also the quiet concentration of the subject. The earthy tones and soft shading of this sketch contribute to its intimate and serene ambiance, inviting viewers to a moment of tranquil introspection alongside the seamstress. The woman's lowered head and focused, yet gentle, handling of her sewing bring out the delicate nature of her task, while the drapery of her garments is rendered with beautifully simple lines that suggest the texture and weight of fabric. He first studied law and philosophy at the University of Berlin, but later studied painting and drawing in Weimar in 1869, in Paris in 1872, and in the Netherlands in 1876–77.
