More about this artwork

The artwork titled "The Miracle at Cana in Galilee" by Józef Mehoffer, painted in 1891, captivatingly illustrates an essential biblical narrative. The painting depicts the miraculous event where Jesus transforms water into wine at a wedding feast, a sign renowned as his first miracle recorded in the Gospel of John.In this vivid portrayal, Józef Mehoffer presents the figures with striking clarity and detail, which is emblematic of his style. The figure of Jesus stands centrally, adorned in a majestic robe of deep green and vibrant red, symbolizing his divine nature and royal kingship. Beside him, the Virgin Mary, dressed in a deep blue robe, demonstrates a gesture of explanation or intercession, reflecting her role in advocating the miracle as described in the scriptures. To the right, a servant boy and a man—likely a steward of the feast—observe in anticipation, subtly underscoring the human witness to the divine act. The background features architectural elements and lush grapevines, enriching the narrative scene with symbols of abundance and festivity typical of a wedding setting. The entire composition is harmoniously integrated, with Mehoffer's use of bold colors and detailed patterning drawing the viewer's eye across the painting, allowing one to absorb the miraculous and celebratory atmosphere of the event.
