More about this artwork

Nestled in our collection is the evocative watercolor by Józef Mehoffer, titled "View from the window of Józef Mehoffer and Stanisław Wyspiański’s studio in Paris (1891)." This painting captures not just a scene, but a moment in time, offering viewers a personal glimpse into the daily life of Paris towards the close of the 19th century from an artist's perspective.Mehoffer's brush strokes reveal a detailed view of rooftops, scattered chimneys, and windows adorned with modest curtains. The rustic charm of weathered facades and inclined rooflines suggests the endearing imperfection of the urban landscape. Most strikingly, each window tells a story—the hanging laundry, peeking plants, and partially visible interiors speak of the lives within, invoking curiosity and wonder.Crafted during his stay in Paris, Mehoffer, alongside his friend and fellow artist Stanisław Wyspiański, captures not just the architectural beauty of Parisian buildings but also the rhythm of city life. This piece is not just a visual travel back in time; it is a narrative woven through the ordinary yet uniquely personal spaces of its subjects. This painting stands as a testament to Mehoffer's sensitivity and keen observational skills, making it a precious window to the past for every visitor who views it.

Józef Mehoffer was a Polish painter and decorative artist, one of the leading artists of the Young Poland movement and one of the most revered Polish artists of his time.

Mehoffer was born in Ropczyce, studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under Władysław Łuszczkiewicz, and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, as well as in Paris at the Académie Colarossi among others. There Mehoffer began painting portraits, often of people of historical significance.
