More about this artwork

This captivating painting by Joseph Mallord William Turner, one of the most celebrated British artists of the 19th century, takes us on a visual journey to the historic city of Genoa. The artwork, titled "Genoa, from the Sea, looking up to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Carignano," provides viewers a majestic seascape perspective of this vibrant Italian city.Through Turner's masterful use of watercolors, the composition highlights the imposing architecture of Genoa as it rises steeply from the edge of the water. The foreground of the painting features tumultuous, rolling waves of the Mediterranean Sea, painted in deep shades of blue and green, conveying both the beauty and the formidable power of nature. The city itself is depicted in a palette of subdued earth tones, with the buildings densely packed and staggered on the hillside. Prominently, the painting directs our view upwards towards the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Carignano, visible at the top of the hill, bathed in a soft, ethereal light. This strategic use of lighting not only draws the eye but also symbolically uplifts the church as a beacon of spiritual and architectural significance.Turner's brushwork offers a sense of dynamism and fluidity, characteristic of his later works, where precise details give way to atmospheric and emotive effects. This painting not only captures a specific locale but also evokes the broader romantic spirit that Turner is renowned for—where the sublime power of nature meets human history and culture. This remarkable work invites admirers to contemplate the timeless interaction between land, sea, and human endeavor.

He left behind more than 550 oil paintings, 2,000 watercolours, and 30,000 works on paper. He was championed by the leading English art critic John Ruskin from 1840, and is today regarded as having elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting.
