More about this artwork

On our current exhibition, we are proud to present "Repose," a captivating painting by the esteemed 19th-century African-American artist, Edward Mitchell Bannister. In this work, Bannister captures a tranquil moment in natural surroundings, appreciating a serene slice of daily life often overlooked."Repose" depicts two figures—a seated man and a standing woman—engaging in a quiet pause in what appears to be a rural setting. The man, reclining comfortably against a backdrop of dense, subtly colored landscape, gazes leisurely at the ground, evoking a sense of deep thought or contemplation. Standing next to him, the woman dressed in a vibrant blue skirt and a yellow blouse, looks outward with hands clasped together, suggesting a moment of peaceful reflection or patient waiting. Her red headscarf adds a splash of color that contrasts strikingly with the predominantly dark, moody tones of the background.Bannister's brushwork is expressive and textured, with thick impasto strokes that imbue the scene with dynamic energy despite the stillness of the figures. The vague, swirling forms of the setting evoke the impermanence and fleeting quality of the moment, reminding viewers of the transitory nature of peace and repose in daily life. This painting, like much of Bannister's work, not only demonstrates his mastery over form and color but also his profound ability to convey deep emotional and contemplative spaces within the simplicity of the everyday.
