More about this artwork

The painting "The Finding of Moses" (1904) by Lawrence Alma-Tadema is a visually rich and meticulously detailed portrayal of a well-known biblical story. This scene captures the moment when Pharaoh's daughter discovers the infant Moses in a basket among the reeds of the Nile River. Alma-Tadema, renowned for his ability to blend classical antiquity with his Victorian sensibilities, sets this scene in a lush, vibrant landscape that evokes the richness of ancient Egypt. At the center of the composition, we see the figures focused around the infant Moses, who is gently cradled in a beautifully woven basket. The daughter of Pharaoh, adorned in elegant jewelry and fine garments, reaches out with a look of compassionate curiosity toward the baby. Her retinue, including young maidens and servants, assists her, some peering eagerly at the child, while others engage in their duties. A striking feature of the painting is the diverse expressions and postures of these figures, each contributing to the narrative's dramatic impact. The background features the tranquil waters of the Nile, beyond which the Egyptian landscape rises subtly, marked by architectural elements and distant figures of the populace. The inclusion of detailed flora at the water’s edge and the intricate depictions of fabrics and textures showcase Alma-Tadema’s skill in creating depth and realism."The Finding of Moses" is not just a religious or historical painting; it is a masterpiece of composition and fine detail, depicting a moment of kindness and wonder that crosses the boundaries of time.

A classical-subject painter, he became famous for his depictions of the luxury and decadence of the Roman Empire, with languorous figures set in fabulous marbled interiors or against a backdrop of dazzling blue Mediterranean Sea and sky.
