More about this artwork

This evocative sketch by renowned Polish artist Józef Mehoffer, titled "Portrait of a Freiburg Man", was crafted in 1928 as a profound observation of character and emotion. The artwork features a middle-aged man dressed in a stylish, well-tailored suit, the details of which are carefully delineated with vigorous pencil strokes that lend a dynamic texture to the fabric. His expression, captured in mid-thought, conveys a sense of contemplative seriousness, possibly reflecting the socio-political climate of the era or personal preoccupations typical of a man of his stature.Mehoffer's mastery in rendering details is evident in the careful depiction of the man’s facial features—from the furrows on his brow to the determined set of his mouth. The background remains understated and sketchy, directing the viewer's focus primarily to the subject’s imposing presence and the psychological depth mirrored in his visage. This portrait not only exemplifies Mehoffer's skill with a pencil but also offers a window into the persona of a man from Freiburg, capturing a moment frozen in time with emotional depth and artistic integrity.
