More about this artwork

This sublime painting, titled "The Virgin and Child with Saints," created by the celebrated Spanish Baroque artist Bartolomé Estebán Murillo between circa 1665 and 1670, captures a heavenly scene that exudes grace and serenity. The artwork depicts the Virgin Mary clad in a dark blue robe, gently holding the infant Jesus, who reaches out with a gesture of blessing. They are elevated on clouds, surrounded by a luminous array of cherubs, each rendered with exquisite detail and individual expressions, adding a vibrant life to the celestial gathering.Below them, earthly saints gaze upward in adoration and reverence. On the left, a saint, possibly John the Baptist, dressed in a camel-hair like cloak and holding a thin cross staff, directs his eyes towards the heavenly group. He is joined by two female figures, likely representing saintly virgins or martyrs, marked by their demure posture and attentive expressions. On the right, a humble friar, possibly Saint Francis, exemplifies devotion, his gaze locked on the divine spectacle above, while a skull at his feet symbolizes the transient nature of earthly existence.Murillo's mastery in the use of light and shadow is evident as it enhances the ethereal quality of the scene, drawing viewers into a moment of spiritual introspection. The painting not only showcases his skill in depicting divine and earthly figures but also speaks volumes about the religious fervor and artistic richness of the Baroque period in Spain.

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (December 1617, January 1, 1618 – April 3, 1682) was a Spanish Baroque painter. Although he is best known for his religious works, Murillo also produced a considerable number of paintings of contemporary women and children. These lively realistic portraits of flower girls, street urchins, and beggars constitute an extensive and appealing record of the everyday life of his times. He also painted two self-portraits, one in the Frick Collection portraying him in his 30s, and one in London's National Gallery portraying him about 20 years later. In 2017–18, the two museums held an exhibition of them.
