More about this artwork

Artist: Bartolomé Estebán MurilloBartolomé Estebán Murillo's poignant painting, "Saint Francis of Assisi Embracing the Crucified Christ," is a profound representation of faith and devotion. This evocative artwork captures a moment of intimate connection between Saint Francis and Christ. Set against a dark and atmospherically rendered background, the figure of Christ hangs on the cross, his body marked by the trials of crucifixion, yet his expression serene and forgiving.Below the cross stands Saint Francis of Assisi, the revered saint known for his deep commitment to humility, poverty, and love for all creatures. In this dramatic scene, Murillo portrays Saint Francis embracing Christ's legs, his face turned upwards in an expression of both sorrow and profound love. His gesture and expression convey a deep emotional connection and spiritual communion with Christ, reflecting his life’s devotion and sacrifice.Adding an ethereal touch to the scene, an angel holding a cartouche flies beside them. The cartouche bears a sacred text, enriching the spiritual dialogue between Heaven and earth, emphasised by the angel's presence.Murillo’s mastery of light and shadow is evident, focusing the viewer’s attention on the central figures. The soft, diffuse light illuminates the body of Christ and Saint Francis, highlighting their shared moment of suffering and compassion, while the background fades into shadows, suggesting the isolation and depth of Saint Francis' spiritual journey. This painting not only captures a moment of intense spiritual exchange but also serves as a visual meditation on suffering, sacrifice, and the promise of divine love.

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (December 1617, January 1, 1618 – April 3, 1682) was a Spanish Baroque painter. Although he is best known for his religious works, Murillo also produced a considerable number of paintings of contemporary women and children. These lively realistic portraits of flower girls, street urchins, and beggars constitute an extensive and appealing record of the everyday life of his times. He also painted two self-portraits, one in the Frick Collection portraying him in his 30s, and one in London's National Gallery portraying him about 20 years later. In 2017–18, the two museums held an exhibition of them.
