More about this artwork

Artist: Maurice Denis (1899)Maurice Denis, a prominent figure in the Symbolist and Nabi movements, captures a serene and introspective moment in his 1899 lithograph titled "Nos âmes en des gestes lentes" (Our Souls in Slow Gestures). This piece evokes a sense of calm and contemplation, characteristic of Denis's approach to blending spiritual overtones with everyday scenes. The painting features two women, each engaged in a moment of quiet stillness. The woman on the left is partially depicted with her face calm and slightly tilted towards a beautiful rose, suggesting a moment of interaction with nature. The other woman is seen in a gentle pose, resting her head on her hand, lost in thought or perhaps in a daydream. Her expression is peaceful, embodying a reflective state of mind.Denis's use of soft, muted colors contributes to the overall tranquil and dreamlike quality of the work. The intricate patterning on the tablecloth, blending floral and rhythmic designs, adds texture and depth to the scene, while also drawing the viewer's eye across the composition. Moreover, the phrase inscribed at the bottom, "Nos âmes en des gestes lentes," literally translates to "Our souls in slow gestures," echoing the painting's theme of inner quietude and the slow revelation of the soul’s contemplative nature through simple, quiet gestures. This theme is further underscored by the subtle yet poignant presence of the rose, a symbol often associated with beauty and spiritual unfolding.Maurice Denis's work invites viewers to pause and reflect, offering a window into the nuanced expressions of the human soul communicated through art.

French painter Maurice Denis (1870-1943) was one of the leading artists during the transition from Impressionism to Modern Art. He was heavily influenced by the Symbolist works of Paul Gauguin. Denis would paint with rich colors and experiment with warm and cool colors. Some of his theories have become the foundations of cubism, fauvism, and abstract art.
