More about this artwork

In the serene landscape of "Conflans" painted in 1873, the skilled brush of Charles François Daubigny captures a harmonious interaction between man and nature, typical of his mature works. This panoramic scene depicted in soft, natural hues, presents a calm river scene bustling with gentle human activity amidst a vast, tranquil backdrop. The composition focuses on the broad smooth river which draws the eye toward the horizon, subtly interrupted by a rowboat manned by a lone individual, illustrating the quiet daily life of the locale. On the riverbanks, small rustic buildings nestled among the trees hint at rural settlement, possibly fishermen’s cottages, contributing to the narrative of a community living in sync with the river.A steamboat, a symbol of the industrial age, is seen in the middle distance, reminding viewers of the technological advancements of the period, yet its subdued rendering integrates it seamlessly into the natural setting rather than dominating it. This suggests Daubigny’s appreciation for progress while also valuing the tranquility and beauty of the natural world. The expansive sky, a dominant element in this composition, with fleeting brush strokes of blue and white, infuses the painting with light and air, enhancing the feeling of open space and the gentle mood of the piece. It’s a testimony to Daubigny’s ability to convey mood and atmosphere through his expert handling of light and color."Conflans" is a quintessential Daubigny work, embodying the essence of the Barbizon school's philosophy of portraying nature with emotion and simplicity. It invites the viewer to pause and reflect on nature's enduring charm and the quiet rhythms of riverside life.

Charles-François Daubigny (15 February 1817 – 19 February 1878) was a French painter, one of the members of the Barbizon school, and is considered an important precursor of impressionism.

He was also a prolific printmaker, mostly in etching but also as one of the main artists to use the cliché verre technique.
