More about this artwork

We are delighted to present Maurice Denis's evocative painting, "Crépuscule Aux Hortensias" (1918), a mesmerizing piece that represents the harmonious blend of nature and human emotion under the enchanting light of twilight.Set against a serene seascape, the painting features a group of figures on a terrace, basking in the subtle glow of the setting sun. The horizon is graced with a melodic arrangement of pinks and blues, casting a dream-like atmosphere over the scene. To the left, three women, absorbed in their individual activities of reading and looking thoughtfully out to sea, are portrayed in flowing robes that echo the colors of the water and sky, suggesting a deep connection to the surrounding environment. In the foreground to the right, children play joyously along a path lined with lush hydrangea bushes—known as 'hortensias' in French—adding a vibrant contrast with their full, blooming clusters of flowers. The pink of these hydrangeas harmonizes with the sky, reinforcing the unity of natural and human elements in the painting."Crépuscule Aux Hortensias" is a captivating example of Denis's skill in using color and light to evoke mood and story, and it remains a profound statement on the beauty of simple, everyday moments.

French painter Maurice Denis (1870-1943) was one of the leading artists during the transition from Impressionism to Modern Art. He was heavily influenced by the Symbolist works of Paul Gauguin. Denis would paint with rich colors and experiment with warm and cool colors. Some of his theories have become the foundations of cubism, fauvism, and abstract art.
