More about this artwork
"Winterstimmung (Abstrakter Kopf)" by Alexej von Jawlensky, painted in 1932, exemplifies the artist's distinctive approach to Expressionist art. Captivatingly abstract, the painting reframes the conventional depiction of a human face into a melodic harmony of form and color. The viewer encounters subtle geometric shaping, where lines and blocks of color merge to create both the outline and emotive contours of the visage. Dominated by a palette of cool grays contrasted with warm red and orange hues, this composition invokes a winter mood, as suggested by the title. The stark, simplified features of the face convey a deep, introspective solemnity fitting for the colder, reflective season of winter.
