More about this artwork
Welcome to a vibrant window into Thorvald Erichsen’s exploration of color and landscape with his 1918 masterpiece, "From Arild, Skåne." This painting captures the picturesque nature of Skåne, a province nestled at the southern tip of Sweden, renowned for its lush landscapes and historic charm.Erichsen’s work is a feast of colors and brisk brushstrokes that convey a fresh, almost raw beauty of the outdoors. The focus of the painting is an intensely blue house, strikingly set against a more subdued background of greens, yellows, and blues, which represent the varied vegetation and the expansive sky. This bold use of blue not only draws in the viewer’s eye but also plays with the idea of perspective and depth, making the house appear almost dreamlike. The surrounding scenery is rendered with an almost impressionistic style, where each stroke adds a dynamic texture, suggesting the movement of trees in the breeze and the lush, uneven terrain. The sky, touched with hints of soft whites and blues, suggests a gentle vastness that complements the vivid earthiness of the landscape."From Arild, Skåne" is not just a visual representation but an emotional interpretation, inviting viewers to feel the breeze and witness the serene beauty that Skåne has to offer.

Thorvald Erichsen was a Norwegian Post-Impressionist painter; primarily known for landscapes and still lifes.
Thorvald Erichsen was born in Trondheim, Norway. He was the son of Ernst Erichsen (1820-1869) and Trine Jensine Rian (1829-1884). Erichsen's father was a confectioner and died when Erichsen was very young.
Although at first he wanted to be a pianist, in 1886 he began studying law, then dropped out and attended a painting school run by Knud Bergslien, where he completed a course in arts and crafts. He later moved to Copenhagen, where he became a student of Christian Zahrtmann, who had a greater influence on his artistic development.
