More about this artwork

by Henri Le SidanerThis enchanting piece, painted in 1931 by the French intimist painter Henri Le Sidaner, depicts a serene and inviting garden scene. The painting, titled "Les Marches Du Jardin, Gerberoy," transports viewers to a quiet, lush garden in Gerberoy, a quaint village in France known for its picturesque beauty. At the foreground, a series of stone steps, mottled with sunlight and shadow, lead down to a tranquil pool of turquoise water. Flanking the steps are two ornate vases brimming with vibrant flowers that add pops of color to the predominantly green palette. The way the flowers spill over the sides of the vases suggests a sense of abundance and growth. What truly draws the viewer into the painting is the brilliant use of light and shadow, which plays across the steps and creates a textured, almost tactile experience. The surrounding garden is rich with varied shades of green, from the deep, cool tones in the shadows to the soft, warm hues where the sunlight gently brushes the leaves. At the end of the path, set against a background of dense foliage, is a decorative balustrade that hints at the hidden depths of the garden beyond, suggesting an Edenic retreat that invites exploration and contemplation.Le Sidaner's masterful use of impressionistic techniques, with soft, dabbed brush strokes, evokes a sense of calm and privacy. This painting is not just a visual journey but also an invitation to step into a quiet moment of beauty and reflection, characteristic of Le Sidaner's intimate portrayals of domestic and hidden landscapes.

Henri Eugène Augustin Le Sidaner (7 August 1862 – 14 July 1939) who was a contemporary of the Post-impressionists, was an intimist painter known for his paintings of domestic interiors and quiet street scenes. His style contained elements of impressionism with the influences of Édouard Manet, Monet and of the Pointillists discernible in his work. Le Sidaner favoured a subdued use of colour, preferring nuanced greys and opals applied with uneven, dappled brushstrokes to create atmosphere and mysticism. A skilled nocturne painter, he travelled widely throughout France and Europe before settling at Gerberoy in the Picardy countryside from where he painted for over thirty years.

Le Sidaner's paintings and pastels were widely collected throughout his career. His seductive views of the gardens he created in the ruins of the medieval fortress at Gerberoy, with their recently vacated tables dappled in sunlight and overhung by roses, have cemented his reputation as a unique artist who does not fit easily into an art movement.
