More about this artwork

Dive deep into the serene ambiance of 18th-century Venice through the masterful brushstrokes of Giovanni Antonio Canal, better known as Canaletto. Renowned for his precision in depicting the Venetian urban landscape, Canaletto brings to life the architectural elegance and the vibrant daily life of Venice in his painting, "Campo Santa Maria Zobenigo, Venice" from the 1730s.This exquisite artwork lures viewers into the Campo (square) of Santa Maria del Giglio, capturing the intricate façade of the Santa Maria Zobenigo church. The church, a jewel of Baroque art, stands majestically with its ornate decorations and classical statues that adorn its exterior, portraying historical and biblical figures that seem to watch over the square. The scene is animated by the presence of everyday Venetians and visitors alike, scattered across the square and engaged in quiet conversation or solitary reflection. The fluidity of their garments contrasts subtly with the rigid architecture, offering a glimpse into the fashion and social dynamics of that era. Notably, the vivid clarity of the sky, painted in a rich palette of blues and dotted with soft, billowing clouds, creates a backdrop that highlights the earthy tones of the city’s buildings.Canaletto's expert play with light and shadow, combined with his meticulous attention to detail, not only documents a historical moment but also evokes the timeless charm of Venice.

Giovanni Antonio Canal (18 October 1697 – 19 April 1768), commonly known as Canaletto, was an Italian painter from the Republic of Venice, considered an important member of the 18th-century Venetian school.

Painter of city views or vedute, of Venice, Rome, and London, he also painted imaginary views, although the demarcation in his works between the real and the imaginary is never quite clearcut. He was further an important printmaker using the etching technique. In the period from 1746 to 1756, he worked in England, where he painted many views of London and other sites, including Warwick Castle and Alnwick Castle. He was highly successful in England, thanks to the British merchant and connoisseur Joseph "Consul" Smith, whose large collection of Canaletto's works was sold to King George III in 1762.
