More about this artwork

Welcome to an exploration of "The Shadow" (L'Ombre), a fascinating work by the French Symbolist artist Odilon Redon, dating from the period of 1896 to 1900. This striking piece is a profound representation of the duality of human nature, encapsulating both the seen and unseen aspects of the self. The painting features a unique and slightly abstract depiction: a human face is seen side-on, serene and composed, enveloped by a darker, more contorted shape resembling a shadow. This shadow, intricately detailed with what seems to be facial features, eyes, and mysterious forms, curves inward as if whispering or merging with the clearer human profile. The shadow appears to be an embodiment of the inner fears, thoughts, or perhaps the darker counterpart of the individual.Redon's work often delves into the realm of dreams and the subconscious, and "The Shadow" is no exception. Here, he uses stark contrasts and fluid forms to create a compelling narrative about the complexities of the human psyche. His technique, with its soft yet pronounced lines, adds depth and intrigue, allowing the viewer to ponder the interconnectedness of light and dark aspects within us all."The Shadow" invites viewers to reflect on their own inner world, encouraging an introspection about the elements that define and influence their existence.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
