More about this artwork

Berthe Morisot’s captivating piece, titled “Young Girl Holding a Basket,” painted in 1891, showcases her unique touch within the Impressionist movement. The painting exudes softness and light with its delicate brush strokes and pastel palette, typical of Morisot’s sensitive and evocative style. The artwork features a young girl, seen from a slightly raised angle, as she reaches up to stabilize a basket perched comfortably on her shoulder. Her back is turned to the viewer, inviting onlookers to fill in the narrative, contemplating where she might be going or what she carries. The subject is adorned in a light blue dress, and a large, floppy straw hat that casts a shadow, gently shading her face. This depiction echoes a moment caught in time, characteristic of Impressionist art’s fleeting nature.Morisot’s skillful use of color and light creates a sense of airiness and movement, with hints of green and yellow suggesting a lively outdoor setting. The background, though abstract, suggests a vibrant day out, possibly in a garden or a bustling market.“Young Girl Holding a Basket” is a beautiful testament to Morisot’s masterful ability to capture the nuances of everyday life and the significant role of women in her compositions.

Landscapes and still life by French impressionist painter Berthe Morisot (1841–1895). She was celebrated for the feminine qualities of her paintings, intuitiveness, spontaneity and delicacy, and she often included her daughter Julie in her paintings. Berthe was married to the brother of Édouard Manet, and some say she was his muse, as she modeled in many of his paintings.
