More about this artwork

In the delicate strokes and tender composition of Berthe Morisot's painting titled "The Artist’s Daughter with a Parakeet," we are introduced to a serene scene rich in emotion and subtlety. Created in 1890, this artwork features Morisot's daughter, capturing both the innocence of youth and the gentle bond between a child and her pet.The young girl in the painting is portrayed with a soft, insightful gaze that seems to transcend her age, hinting at the depth of her thoughts. She is dressed in a peach-pink dress, the folds and drapes rendered with impressionistic flair, indicative of Morisot's mastery in handling light and texture. The dress, adorned with a discreet green bow at the waist, complements the youthful and poised demeanor of the sitter.Beside the girl, a parakeet perches gracefully within a simple, yet elegant cage, a splash of vibrant green against the softer background hues. This bird, seemingly attentive to the girl’s presence, symbolizes companionship and the natural world, themes often revisited in Morisot's works. The interaction forms a gentle narrative of friendship and mutual curiosity, bridging the gap between the human and animal realms. The setting, while subdued, features hints of a domestic interior, with a faint outline of a sculpture and a glimpse of the room’s architecture, further rooting the scene in everyday life. The background, painted in muted blues and greys, allows the viewer to focus entirely on the interaction between the child and her parakeet, emphasizing the warmth of the scene.

Landscapes and still life by French impressionist painter Berthe Morisot (1841–1895). She was celebrated for the feminine qualities of her paintings, intuitiveness, spontaneity and delicacy, and she often included her daughter Julie in her paintings. Berthe was married to the brother of Édouard Manet, and some say she was his muse, as she modeled in many of his paintings.
