More about this artwork

Artist: Samuel Jessurun de MesquitaDate: August 17, 1914"Ringuil" is a captivating woodcut print by Dutch artist Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, known for his expressive and intricate works. This piece, created in 1914, showcases a stylized owl, centered and imposing, set against a textured background that complements the focal subject with its richly patterned details. The owl in "Ringuil" embodies a striking blend of naturalism and stylistic abstraction. Its feathers are rendered with meticulous, almost hypnotic patterns that give a sense of depth and volume. The eyes of the owl are oversized and compelling, drawing the viewer into a gaze that is simultaneously wise and enigmatic. This focal point is framed by a simple, yet bold border that contrasts with the complexity of the owl’s plumage. The name "Ringuil" and the date of creation, prominently displayed at the bottom of the print, suggest a personal or significant meaning behind the work, possibly commemorating an event or capturing a moment in time.Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita's mastery in woodcut techniques is evident in the texture and contrast he achieves, making "Ringuil" not just a portrayal of an owl, but a profound piece of art that invites interpretation and admiration. The composition as a whole is a testament to de Mesquita's ability to fuse form, texture, and symbolism into a cohesive and striking visual narrative.
