More about this artwork

Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita's artwork "Geabstraheerde vogel" (Abstracted Bird) from 1921 is a fascinating exploration of form and texture, rendered in a meticulous pointillist technique. The image itself seems to straddle between abstraction and realism, teasing the viewer's perception and challenging them to discern the familiar contours of a bird. Mesquita's signature style, which often plays with optical depth and structural complexity, is evident in this work. The composition features what appears to be a fragmented, almost sculptural representation of a bird. The creature's wing and feather details are rendered with such precision and intricacy, suggesting both motion and stillness simultaneously. Dark, bold areas contrast sharply with lighter, more detailed sections, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. This not only highlights the abstract quality of the subject but also enhances the overall geometric arrangement within the piece."Geabstraheerde vogel" is a perfect example of how Mesquita skillfully blurs the line between the abstract and the figurative, inviting viewers to delve into a world where forms and figures emerge subtly from a complex network of dots and lines. This piece is an exceptional testament to the artist's innovative approach and his profound influence on the graphic arts, particularly within the context of 20th-century modernism.
