More about this artwork

This painting by Mary Cassatt, titled "Mother About to Wash Her Sleepy Child," captures an intimate and tender moment between a mother and her child. Mary Cassatt was exceptional in depicting the private and serene moments of maternal care with an extraordinary sensitivity and insight. In the painting, the mother is shown holding her young child, who appears to be drowsy or asleep, suggesting a moment of quietness before a bedtime wash. The mother's gaze is directed tenderly toward her child, emphasizing a bond and emotional connection that Mary Cassatt masterfully projects through her work. The mother is dressed in a soft, light-colored garment that echoes the gentleness of the scene. The child, in a simple white outfit, appears relaxed and comfortable in the mother's arms, safe and cared for. The brushwork is loose and expressive, creating a feel of immediacy and the impressionistic style Cassatt is known for. The background, with its cooler tones and abstract leaf patterns, contrasts with the warm and detailed depiction of the figures, focusing the viewer’s attention on them.Cassatt's use of light and color enhances the painting's emotional and aesthetic depth. Notice how the light caresses the child’s face and the mother’s hands, highlighting their interaction and the softness of the moment. This scene isn't just a routine daily activity but is elevated to a moment of beauty and affection, which is a hallmark of Cassatt’s approach to scenes of domestic life.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.

She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
