More about this artwork

"Blesbok (1931)" by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita is a striking example of the artist's mastery in the use of black and white contrasts and his refined graphical style. This woodcut print portrays a blesbok, an antelope native to South Africa, in a serene, restful pose within an oval frame. The starkly contrasting black background enhances the delicate texture and detail captured in the animal's form, from the gentle contours of its body to the intricate markings and the elegant sweep of its horns.De Mesquita's technique displays a comprehensive understanding of his subject, capturing not just the physical but also hinting at the quiet grace inherent to the creature. The soft, rounded edges of the figure and the subtle variations in line work suggest a palpable softness and pliability in the animal's body, an effect that adds a tactile dimension to the visual experience. This piece not only celebrates the physical beauty of the blesbok but also evokes a sense of calm and reflection, inviting the viewer to contemplate the serene dignity of the natural world. "Blesbok" is a testament to Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita's exceptional abilities in expressing profound narratives through minimalist designs.
