This artwork, dating from 1908, showcases the profile of a young male student, captured in a moment of contemplative repose. The student is depicted in a stark, black and white contrast, which emphasizes the clean lines and details of his appearance and attire. He is dressed in a formal suit with a traditional lapel, suggesting the dress code of that era for scholars or young gentlemen. His posture, leaning slightly forward with a relaxed gaze, evokes a sense of youthful curiosity or perhaps a momentary daydream. The large, curving shape adjacent to him, resembling part of a chair, frames the figure, adding a dynamic element to the composition.Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, known for his prowess in graphic techniques, employs a minimalist yet expressive approach to outline the characteristics and demeanor of the young man. This portrayal not only captures the physical likeness but also hints at the introspective nature of the student, leaving viewers to ponder about his thoughts or the subject of his study. This lithograph exemplifies De Mesquita's skill in capturing human expressions and his ability to use stark contrasts and simple forms to convey depth and personality.
