More about this artwork

This stunning artwork by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, titled "Vrouwelijk naakt achter vaas met aronskelken" (Female Nude Behind Vase with Arum Lilies), produced in 1912, presents a striking visual synthesis of contrasting forms and intricate patterning. At the heart of this piece is the delicate depiction of a female figure bending gracefully over an ornamental vase. The vase, rendered in deep black, intricately contrasts with the soft contouring of the woman’s bare skin. The background of the work is composed of a geometric pattern that exudes a sense of depth and complex craftsmanship, a hallmark of de Mesquita's refined and meticulous style. The use of stark black and white tones amplifies the dramatic interplay between the figure and the surroundings, heightening the emotional intensity of the scene. This artwork exemplifies de Mesquita's exceptional skill in woodcut printing, showcasing his ability to manipulate light and shadow to evoke both texture and motion. The female form, depicted with such vulnerability and elegance, leans into the vase in a pose that suggests both introspection and tranquility. The vase itself, adorned with sculptural arum lilies, adds a naturalistic element that complements the structured environment."Vrouwelijk naakt achter vaas met aronskelken" not only captures the viewer's gaze through its aesthetic appeal but also invites a deeper contemplation of its themes of beauty, nature, and serenity.
