More about this artwork

In the compelling tableau of "Gilotína," crafted by the distinguished Konštantín Bauer in 1927, viewers are plunged into a dramatic and vigorous scene steeped in historical resonance. This monochromatic painting captures a tumultuous moment surrounding a guillotine, the notorious symbol of the French Revolution, yet Bauer’s work transcends specific temporal settings, speaking to universal themes of justice, power, and human survival.Central to the composition is the formidable structure of the guillotine itself, depicted with startling clarity and undeniable presence. Around it, Bauer arranges a throng of figures, each rendered in frantic, swirling strokes that suggest movement and chaos. The characters in the foreground, a mix of onlookers and participants, are portrayed with vivid emotive expressions and dynamic poses, illustrating the spectrum of human emotion from despair to fervent zeal.Disturbing yet fascinating, "Gilotína" serves not only as a historical commentary but also as a profound exploration of the human condition and the societal impulses towards spectacle and retribution. Bauer’s agile brushwork and masterful use of light and shadow envelop the scene in an almost tangible tension, making this painting an enduring reflection on periods of upheaval and change.
