More about this artwork

"Bather and Geese" (1895) by Camille Pissarro is a captivating etching that beautifully captures a tender moment of tranquility and natural harmony. The artwork features a solitary figure, a bather, standing amidst a lush, shadow-dappled landscape. The bather, positioned at the center, is depicted in a pose that suggests a moment of serene contemplation or gentle preparation before entering a concealed body of water, partially hidden by the surrounding foliage. To the right of the figure, a group of geese amble peacefully, their delicate forms contrasting with the dense textures of the woodland. Pissarro's masterful use of expressive lines and varying intensities of shading not only emphasizes the dappled light filtering through the trees but also conveys a sense of depth and intimacy within the scene. This etching is emblematic of Pissarro's keen observation of both human and animal subjects and his ability to express the soothing, almost therapeutic effect of nature on the human spirit.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
