More about this artwork

"The Gleaners," painted in 1889 by the renowned Impressionist artist Camille Pissarro, captures a serene yet poignant scene from rural life. This beautiful work of art, imbued with a sense of peace and diligent labor, portrays several figures gleaning a field after harvest. Gleaning, the act of collecting leftover crops from farmers' fields after they have been commercially harvested, was a common practice in the 19th century, providing sustenance for those in lower economic strata. In Pissarro’s painting, the composition focuses on a group of figures, predominantly women, who are bent over or standing as they gather what remains in the field. The artist's use of soft, yet vibrant colors conveys the warmth of the late afternoon sun. The shadows and light are masterfully depicted, highlighting the form and movement of the figures against the expansive landscape. The background reveals a lush, rolling countryside, stretching into a delicately colored sky, which suggests the late time of day. What is particularly striking about Pissarro’s depiction is the dignity and tranquility he lends to the labor of the gleaners. There is an undoubted hardship in their task, yet there is also a certain harmony with nature and a recognition of their essential role in the cycle of agriculture. Pissarro’s work reflects his social concerns and his empathy for the working class, themes that are recurrent throughout his oeuvre."The Gleaners" not only showcases Pissarro’s talent in capturing everyday life through his Impressionist techniques but also serves as a social commentary, inviting viewers to reflect on the lives and challenges faced by the working poor.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
