More about this artwork

This remarkable painting by the Swedish artist Carl Larsson portrays Magnus Olsson, a distinguished figure in Swedish society during the late 19th century. Painted in 1893, Larsson’s work showcases his astounding ability to capture not just the physical likeness but also the subtle nuances of his subject’s character and personality. In this portrait, Magnus Olsson is depicted in a formal black coat, complete with a white shirt and tie, which signifies his social standing and the customs of the era. His face, marked by the wisdom of age, gazes off to the side, a quiet reflection apparent in his expression that hints at years of experience and contemplation. The light tones on his face contrast with the darker background, illuminating his visage and hands which are finely rendered to show details of skin texture and age.Larsson’s attention to detail is further evidenced in the accessories that adorn the scene. Olsson is seen with a pocket watch and chain prominently displayed, perhaps indicating his punctuality or reliability. There is a paper and what appears to be a writing implement on the table beside him, suggesting his scholarly or administrative duties. A touch of warmth is added to the composition through the use of red and gold in the drapery on the right and the ornament on the table, providing a slight vibrancy to the otherwise reserved color palette. The painting not only serves as a study of a person but also reflects a piece of Swedish cultural history, encapsulating the dignity and decorum of its subject. "Magnus Olsson" by Carl Larsson is a masterful portrayal, offering viewers a glimpse into the past with every brushstroke.
