More about this artwork

Welcome to our latest exhibit featuring the intriguing work "L’amazone" (1909) by Amedeo Modigliani. This painting showcases Modigliani's unique style, characterized by elongated forms and the elegant simplicity of his subjects."L'amazone" captures the portrait of a young woman, confidently posed and donned in a stylish riding outfit. Her attire consists of a striking mustard-colored jacket with bold black gloves, complemented by a chic, dark hat that frames her graceful face. Modigliani's portrayal emphasizes the woman's slender neck and the subtle turn of her head, which, combined with her direct gaze, exudes a sense of quietude and strength. The dark, textured background contrasts sharply with the vibrancy of her jacket, directing our focus entirely on her poised and self-assured presence. Modigliani’s use of smooth lines and restrained color palette imbues the painting with a timeless elegance, while the direct gaze of the subject invites viewers to ponder her thoughts and personality. This painting not only highlights Modigliani's skill in capturing the essence of his subjects but also reflects the changing roles and fashion of women during the early 20th century. "L’amazone" is a celebration of both the artist’s distinctive approach to portraiture and the modern woman of his era.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard MunchPaul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
