More about this artwork

"Portrait De Femme" is a captivating painting by the distinguished Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, created around 1917-1918. Modigliani, renowned for his unique approach to portraiture, features a solemn and introspective woman whose elongated face embodies the artist's iconic style. The subject's gaze is both direct and enigmatic, engaging the viewer with an air of composed detachment. The painting is marked by its elegant simplicity and the fluid, curvilinear lines that define the woman's visage and slender neck. Her almost almond-shaped eyes and delicately arched eyebrows add to her mysterious aura. The color palette is subdued, with earthy tones and muted contrasts, focusing on the texture and depth of the background which subtly complements the figure without overshadowing her presence.Modigliani’s use of elongation and abstraction suggests influences from African sculpture and Cubism, which he merges seamlessly into his own distinctive idiom.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard MunchPaul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
