More about this artwork

The evocative painting *Madame Amédée (Woman with Cigarette)* by Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani is a captivating expression of emotional nuance and artistic skill. Dated 1918, this piece showcases Modigliani's signature style characterized by elongated faces and necks that suggest a refined elegance intertwined with a melancholic poise. In this portrait, the subject is depicted with a subtle, introspective expression. Her eyes, tinged with a soft sadness or reflective mood, draw the viewer into a contemplative dialog. Dressed in a simple, elegant black dress that contrasts sharply with the warm, muted tones of the background, Madame Amédée emanates a quiet dignity. Situated in what appears to be a modest interior, the surroundings feature a wooden chair and a softly rendered backdrop that ensures the focus remains intensely on her.Madame Amédée holds a cigarette in her left hand, adding a modern twist to her otherwise timeless portrayal. This detail not only gives a glimpse into her personal habits but also culturally situates the painting at a time when smoking was often a symbol of sophistication and modernity, particularly among women.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard MunchPaul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
