More about this artwork

Discover the Elegance of Minimalism in Modigliani's "Frontaler runder Kopf" (1914-15)Dive into the captivating simplicity of Amedeo Modigliani's "Frontaler runder Kopf." This intriguing drawing, created between 1914 and 1915, showcases Modigliani's distinctive approach to portraiture that emphasizes stylized and elongated forms. The artwork features a sparse but poignant depiction of a face, drawn with refined, continuous lines that capture the essence of the subject without indulgence in detail. The artwork consists of a single, rounded outline of a head with the facial features delicately centered. The eyes are absent, replaced by a bold, singular line that acts as a nose, and below it, a simple mouth. This reduction of detail not only invites viewers to ponder the emotions and personality of the depicted figure but also highlights Modigliani’s skill in conveying depth and presence with minimal strokes."Frontaler runder Kopf" serves as an exquisite example of Modigliani's modernist vision, stripping down the complexities of human features to their bare, emotive essentials. This piece is a testament to the artist’s ability to convey powerful expression through simplicity, making it a timeless work that resonates with the minimalist tone of early 20th-century avant-garde art.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard MunchPaul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
