More about this artwork

Explore the intriguing simplicity and depth of Amedeo Modigliani's artwork, "Langgestreckter Kopf, daneben Säulensockel" from 1914-15. In this minimalistic yet captivating drawing, Modigliani showcases his mastery in forming complex emotions through simple lines. At first glance, the viewer is greeted by an elongated, abstract form that suggests a stretched-out head or face on the left side of the paper. These lines, while few and concise, beautifully capture a sense of elongation and somberness, characteristic of Modigliani's known style of portraiture which often emphasizes elongated shapes and graceful curves.Beside this hauntingly serene visage is a depiction of what appears to be a column base, rendered with rudimentary, yet deliberate strokes. The juxtaposition of the organic, fluid form of the head against the rigid, structured geometry of the column base creates a dynamic and thought-provoking contrast. It is as if the soft form of a human psyche is paired against the hard reality of physical structures, a theme that can be interpreted in various philosophical or emotional contexts. This piece is superb for appreciators of Modigliani who seek to explore his range beyond his often more populated colorful canvases. It reflects his ability to speak volumes through minimalism — an invitation to dive deeper into the emotions and thoughts that simple lines can evoke.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard MunchPaul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
