More about this artwork

"Composition, Motif Decoratif" by Georges Valmier is a striking example of Cubist artistry, dating back to around 1925-1930. This painting exemplifies Valmier's unique approach to abstraction, which is characterized by the decomposition and reassembly of forms through geometric structuring. The artwork features a rich palette of deep reds, browns, blues, and blacks, complemented by touches of white and light pastel colors that add a subtle vibrancy to the composition. Valmier skillfully arranges various shapes—rectangles, a circle, and abstract forms—to create a layered and dynamic visual experience. The central elements appear to float against a dark backdrop, creating an illusion of depth and movement. Each geometric form in "Composition, Motif Decoratif" is meticulously outlined, enhancing the clarity and crispness of the composition. This not only reflects Valmier’s precision but also his intent to explore the relationships between color, shape, and space in his works. This painting invites viewers to delve into an analytical interpretation, encouraging them to decipher the spatial relationships and to appreciate the harmony of geometric abstraction.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
