More about this artwork

"Collection decors et couleurs Pl.18 (1930)" by Georges Valmier is a captivating example of abstract art that intricately plays with shapes, colors, and compositions to produce visual harmony. Valmier, a pivotal figure in the Cubist movement, extends his exploration of geometric abstraction through this piece. The artwork is subdivided into four panels, each distinct yet harmoniously interconnected, showcasing Valmier’s masterful use of muted yet impactful color palettes. In the top left panel, bold greens and browns surround an amoeba-like shape, accented with dots and undulating lines, suggesting a lively organic form nestled within structural bounds. Adjacent on the right, soothing purples and greens interlock with geometric elements like squares and a sinuous violet wave, creating a rhythmic flow across the composition. The lower panels continue this exploration of dynamic equilibrium. On the left, stark linear forms and circular motifs in shades of brown, green, and black appear almost mechanical in contrast to the organic feel of the other segments. The final panel contrasts with curvaceous lines and geometric shapes, including circles and diamonds set against shades of green and brown, emphasizing a sophisticated balance between symmetry and fluidity.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
