More about this artwork

20 (1930) by Georges ValmierImmerse yourself in the dazzling complexity of "Collection decors et couleurs Pl.20," a striking piece by the French Cubist painter Georges Valmier. Created in 1930, this painting exemplifies Valmier’s distinctive style that masterfully intertwines geometric abstraction with bold, vivid colors. The composition is segmented into three main panels, each boasting its own array of shapes and intricate patterns. In the top-left panel, symmetrical arrangements of circles, arcs, and lines create a harmonious balance, using a soothing palette of pastels punctuated by deep black and vibrant yellow accents. Adjacent to this, the top-right panel features a dynamic interplay of zigzag patterns and polka dots, executed in shades of brown, pink, and green, all of which contribute to a sensation of lively movement.Dominating the lower half of the canvas is a larger, more complex tableau. Here, Valmier orchestrates a vivid clash of shapes and colors; rich oranges, blues, and greens form a backdrop to an array of geometric forms that seem to float and overlap in a mesmerizing dance. Stripes, circles, and angular forms are layered with precision, creating an almost three-dimensional effect that draws the viewer’s eye across the canvas."Collection decors et couleurs Pl.20" is a testament to Valmier’s innovative approach to Cubism, where structure meets spontaneity. This painting not only reflects the rhythmic beauty and color theory of the early 20th century but also stands as a beacon of inspirational design that transcends time.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
