More about this artwork

In the intriguing canvas of Georges Valmier's 'Jumping Jack', one encounters a vivid exploration of abstraction that bursts with energetic forms and captivating colors. Painted in 1919, this artwork displays an artistic transformation reflective of the early 20th century avant-garde movements. The painting portrays a figure that resembles a toy, specifically a jumping jack - a plaything composed of segments joined by strings that, when pulled, create an animated action. Valmier’s use of geometric abstraction imbues the figure with a dynamic presence. The face, highlighted by sharp, angular lines and bold red cheeks, draws the eye towards a central vertical symmetry. A harmonious confusion of triangles, rectangles, and undetermined shapes in yellows, purples, and reds forms the body, suggesting movement and playfulness. Background tones of soft red and sketched lines contribute to a sense of depth and further emphasize the figure’s playful character. The tawny hues whisper of the paper's texture underneath, providing a warm, organic base that contrasts with the sharply defined, colorful geometric forms.'Jumping Jack' is more than just an image; it is a lively dance of color, shape, and emotion that captures the experimental spirit of its time. A wonderful example of how traditional subjects can be transformed through the lens of abstract art, this painting invites viewers to ponder the interplay between structure and freedom, tradition and innovation.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
