More about this artwork

19' by Georges Valmier**At first glance, Georges Valmier's 'Collection décors et couleurs Pl.19' can be bewildering with its complex interplay of geometric forms and vibrant color palette. Crafted in 1930, this artwork is a quintessential example of abstract art making a bold departure from traditional representations and diving into a purely visual language. The painting is composed of multiple geometric panels, each distinct yet harmoniously integrated. The left-side panel features muted stripes punctuated by concentric circles, creating a sense of rhythmic movement. Moving to the center, the composition pivots to a dynamic clash of angular shapes and lines in a spectrum of pink, beige, black, and white, interspersed with red squares that draw the eye and add depth. The right panel complements this with its playful assortment of curves, rectangles, and dotted textures, bordered by a serpentine form that adds fluidity against the otherwise angular backdrop.Valmier's expertise in textile design is evident in his meticulous attention to texture and pattern, treating each segment of the canvas as a piece of fabric, woven together to create a cohesive tableau. The arrangement of elements in 'Collection décors et couleurs Pl.19' is reminiscent of a collage, where each piece, while abstract, suggests familiarity and purpose, akin to architectural blueprints or mechanical schematics. This painting not only reflects the artistic innovation of the early 20th century but also invites viewers to contemplate the role of geometry and color in evoking emotion and constructing visual narratives. Just as each shape in Valmier's work suggests infinite possibilities, so does each viewing reveal new interpretations, making 'Collection décors et couleurs Pl.

Georges Valmier (11 April 1885 – 25 March 1937) was a French painter. His work encompassed the great movements in the modern history of painting, starting with Impressionism in his early years, then Cubism which he discovered when he was around 25 years old, and finally Absstractionism from 1921. He also designed sets and costumes for theater and ballet, and models for fabrics, carpets, and other objects. His oil paintings do not exceed 300 in number, since Valmier died prematurely at the age of 51. His paintings were the culmination of many preparatory drafts in gouaches, multiple versions of which are works in themselves and reflect his penchant for colors and inventive shapes. Valmier was also a musician. He performed the works of Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, and Satie at major concerts and in churches, and had a decisive influence on the career of André Jolivet.
