More about this artwork

"Buste D’homme En Costume" (1890) is a luminous example of Édouard Vuillard's mastery in portraiture, highlighting his distinctive style that blends intimate observation with a rich, textural expressionism. This painting showcases a profile view of a man dressed in an elegant, striped jacket that radiates against a backdrop of bold, contrasting colors. The face of the man, rendered in shades of yellow, appears to be contemplative or inward-looking, a feature typical of Vuillard's subjects who often seem absorbed in their private worlds. The background, painted in various hues of blue, green, and red, enhances the subject’s silhouette, making the figure stand out starkly amidst a tumultuous sea of color. Vuillard’s use of texture is evident here, where the strokes are visibly layered and vibrant, suggesting motion and depth. This artwork is not just a static portrait but a dynamic interplay of color and form, inviting viewers to perceive the emotions and character of the depicted individual beyond mere facial expressions."Buste D’homme En Costume" is a brilliant representation of the Nabi philosophy, to which Vuillard was a proponent, where the translation of visual experiences comes with a deeply personal and emotional approach, aiming to capture the soul of the subject rather than just the aesthetic.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
