More about this artwork

Édouard Vuillard, a prominent figure in the intimate, post-impressionistic style often referred to as Intimism, delicately captures his mother in the painting titled *Madame Vuillard Avec Une Tasse Rose* (circa 1893). This artwork offers a window into Vuillard's personal life and the quiet, but profoundly expressive world of his private quarters. In this painting, Madame Vuillard is depicted seated at a table, her presence taking center stage against a richly patterned background that almost envelops her. The use of muted, yet warm tones enhances the sensuous feeling of the domestic interior. Madame Vuillard, dressed in a dark outfit with a crisp white apron, gazes pensively beyond the viewer. Her hands rest gently around a rose-tinted cup, a symbol of the color and warmth that intimate daily objects can bring into our lives. The table presents another layer of intimacy with a display of a small vase containing a sprig which adds a touch of nature to the scene. The brushwork is typical of Vuillard's style during this period, emphasizing texture and pattern, which allows the background and the figure to interact harmoniously, creating a cohesive environment filled with silent narratives. This painting is not only a beautiful representation of Vuillard's artistic mastery but also serves as a loving, introspective view of his mother, hinting at the deep bond they shared.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
