More about this artwork

"Winter in Florida" is a vibrant portrayal by Sir John Lavery, capturing the essence of leisure and social activity in a sun-soaked Floridian landscape. This painting vividly illustrates a bustling pool scene, encapsulating a unique moment of winter life where the season interprets warmth and outdoor enjoyment, rather than the typical cold and retreat. The canvas is awash with light and color, depicting people of various ages engaged in activities ranging from swimming and sunbathing to socializing. The azure water of the pool acts as the central focus, drawing viewers into the cool, inviting depths contrasted against the warmth of the terracotta and cream-colored architecture that surrounds it. Lavery's masterful use of color highlights the differences in textures and materials, from the reflective gleam on the water to the soft, dappled light on the poolside tiles.Dynamic and alive with movement, the scene conveys the relaxed atmosphere of a holiday destination frequented during the winter months by those seeking refuge from colder climates. Each figure in the painting, whether animatedly chatting, contemplatively reclining, or actively swimming, contributes to a tapestry of interaction and leisure that defines this lush, sunny retreat.Artistically, Lavery's brushwork is loose and expressive, lending a sense of immediacy and spontaneity to the scene. The expansive sky, a subtle gradient from soft blues to gentle whites, casts an overarch of tranquility over the lively human activity below."Winter in Florida" is more than a depiction of a geographic locale; it is an exploration of social and recreational culture, beautifully executed in Sir John Lavery’s distinctively vivid and fluid style.

Sir John Lavery was an Irish painter best known for his portraits and wartime depictions.

John Lavery was born in inner North Belfast, baptised at St Patrick's Church, Belfast and, while still a child, moved to Scotland where he attended Haldane Academy in Glasgow in the 1870s and the Académie Julian in Paris in the early 1880s. He returned to Glasgow and was associated with the Glasgow School. William Burrell, a wealthy ship owner, was a faithful patron of Scottish artists including Joseph Crawhall II, with whom Lavery studied. In 1888 he was commissioned to paint the state visit of Queen Victoria to the Glasgow International Exhibition. This launched his career as a society painter and he moved to London soon after. In 1896, William Burrell commissioned Lavery to paint a portrait of his sister Mary Burrell.
