More about this artwork

Explore the captivating allure of "Weib," an exceptional portrait painted by Karl Wiener around 1929. With its strikingly vivid colors and stylized forms, this masterpiece intricately blends expressionist elements with a touch of modernity, marking a unique period in art history. The portrait features a woman dressed in a typical fashion of the late 1920s, adorned with a stylish, deep blue cloche hat that gracefully complements her soft, bobbed hair. Her serene and slightly enigmatic face is depicted in warm yellow tones, subtly highlighted with shades of green and purple, enhancing her serene yet introspective expression. The woman’s red lips and the color accents around her eyes introduce a lively contrast that draws the viewer into her mystique. The background's blazing orange sets a striking contrast to her cool-toned attire and hat, suggesting a narrative beyond the immediate calmness of her demeanor. This choice of color, as well as the smooth, detailed application of the medium, exemplifies Wiener's expertise in creating mood and character through hue and form."Weib" is not only a visual exploration of style and color but an intimate portrayal that invites viewers to ponder the story behind the woman's gaze. This painting is an exemplary piece showcasing Karl Wiener's formidable ability to capture the essence of his subject while engaging boldly with color and shape.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
