More about this artwork

"Snowy Landscape at South Norwood" is a captivating painting by the influential Impressionist artist Camille Pissarro, completed in 1871. This artwork beautifully portrays a tranquil winter scene in South Norwood, a location near London where Pissarro lived during his stay in England. In this painting, Pissarro captures the serenity and freshness of a snowy day. The landscape is dominated by soft white snow, blanketing the ground and clinging to the branches of the barren trees that stand prominently in the foreground. The gentle brush strokes and subtle blend of whites and blues create a chilly yet inviting atmosphere, evoking the cold touch of winter air.Further enriching the composition, in the middle distance, we can see quaint houses with their snow-laden rooftops, surrounded by sparse trees. These elements, juxtaposed against a pale sky dotted with soft, wispy clouds, offer a glimpse into the quiet rural life during a snowfall.Pissarro's use of light and shadow, along with his characteristic Impressionist technique, adds a lively yet peaceful quality to the scene, making this painting not only a visual exploration of color and light but also a reflective piece on the stillness and beauty of winter landscapes.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
