More about this artwork

Karl Wiener's painting, "Sonnenuntergang," is a captivating exploration of color and form that beautifully captures the essence of a sunset. Created around 1923, this composition utilizes bold, abstract shapes and a vivid palette to evoke the dynamic and dramatic end of the day.In this artwork, Wiener employs contrasting colors with shades of deep blue and bright orange that dominate the scene. The central motif, a radiant orange and red sun, sinks beneath undulating, abstract hills portrayed in rich blues and hints of green. This intersection of warm and cool tones not only enhances the visual impact of the sunset but also conveys the tranquil yet intense atmosphere typical of this time of day.Surrounding the sun, the sky is scattered with abstract cloud formations, stylized in lighter blues and yellows, adding a dynamic, almost playful element to the composition. These shapes seem to float freely, suggesting the fleeting, ethereal nature of clouds as they catch the last light."Sonnenuntergang" is a testament to Wiener's ability to simplify natural phenomena into geometric forms, allowing viewers to experience the emotional and visual power of a sunset in a new and intriguing way.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
