More about this artwork

"Vom Tod zum Morgen" (From Death to Morning), painted in 1941 by Karl Wiener, is a compelling visual journey through abstract and expressionist elements that evoke a potent sense of transformation and introspection. In this intriguing artwork, the foreground is dominated by stark figures that include a prominently placed man with a haunting, gaunt expression. His face, representing perhaps the essence of human emotion and vulnerability, is positioned against a chaotic backdrop of fractured, geometric shapes, suggesting the crumbling or rebuilding of structures. This geometric disarray transitions towards a rising or setting sun that cuts through the darkness of the scattered forms, implying hope or renewal amidst turmoil. Around the central figure, a mixed assembly of faces and figures can be seen; their expressions vary from neutral to contemplative, adding layers of human experience to the scene. The use of monochromatic shades contrasts with the complex composition, directing focus on the emotional impact of the imagery rather than the vibrancy of colors. The artistic style of Karl Wiener here blurs the lines between reality and abstraction, inviting viewers to interpret the scene through a personal lens of existential themes and the resilience of the human spirit.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
