More about this artwork

The striking artwork "Der Dieb" by Karl Wiener, created in 1922, presents a surreal and captivating visual narrative. The central figure, striking in stature, dominates the composition by reaching upwards towards a dark horizontal band, grasping the crescent moon with one hand. This act of "stealing" the moon imbues the painting with a deep sense of myth and poetic jest.Below this towering figure, a quaint townscape unfolds in a monochromatic palette, characterized by its sweeping curves and clustered forms that suggest a lively yet serene medieval village. The stylized, elongated limbs of the figure and its exaggerated movements lend a fantastical element to the piece, challenging our perceptions of reality and scale.Wiener's use of sharp contrasts, the granularity of the pencil work, and the starkness of the scene evoke a dreamlike quality that is both eerie and whimsically charming.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
