More about this artwork

"Blind kauern wir am Rand der Erde…" is a compelling work by artist Karl Wiener, dating from around 1935. This piece is a striking example of art as a narrative tool, combining visual elements with text to enrich the viewer's experience. At first glance, the painting presents a solemn figure draped in a cloak, possibly signifying solitude or contemplation. The background is minimalistic with horizontal lines and subdued colors, emphasizing a serene yet somber mood. The presence of a celestial body, resembling either a sun or a moon, contrasts with the otherwise muted tones, giving a hint of light and perhaps a symbol of hope or the passage of time. The text, integrated artistically as part of the painting itself, transcribes to "Blindly crouching at the edge of the earth… listening into the night." This poetic inclusion, attributed to Fritz Weinstabl, adds a profound layer of interpretation. It suggests themes of human vulnerability, reflection, and an existential search for meaning, resonating deeply with the figure's introspective posture.Karl Wiener’s technique of incorporating text with image invites the viewer to a dual engagement—both to see and read, thereby weaving an interactive and reflective encounter with the art.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
